Dunfermline faced a combined Dalziel & East Kilbride U15 squad in the latest conference fixture. Unfortunately the visitors were not able to field a U16 team, so the decision was made to play a three team round robin with our U16s involved as well.
So we had just a half to play against the visiting side.
Dalziel/East Kilbride started the stronger team, and managed to muscle their way over on the left, Dunfermline looking poor defensively with our guard-shield-A at the rucks nowhere to be seen.
A mistake at the restart - the ball not going 10m - saw a scrum to the opposition and another spell of pressure into the Dunfermline half. Finally we turned the ball over on the right, and moved the ball well to Arron Gould, playing at full back for us, who set up a ruck and allowed us to get the ball back along into space on the right. Good interplay with all of our backs involved saw us take the ball down to their 22, but a mistake allowed Dalziel/EK to escape and mount their own attack - poor defensive work in being slow to fill the field allowed Dalziel/EK's fullback to attack and a neat show-and-go saw him break the line; good covering by Aaron and Gregor saved the try.
Further pressure from the visitors through a good kick from their stand-off, then another fly hack through from the chasing winger, saw Dalziel come close again, Matthew H saving the day by touching the ball down in the scoring area.
Good thinking from Andrew at the resulting 22 - a quick drop to himself - saw him pass to Finlee, then out to Logan K who made ground down the right. When he was caught, Finlee had looped around in support and burst through the covering tackles to score. Andrew kicked the conversion.
From a penalty within our own half following the restart, Ruaridh passed to Duncan, who played Gregor into a gap in the line and evade the chasing defenders to score from 65m. Simple stuff done well.
Fine margins. A handling move from the base of a scrum saw Kian pass to Aaron who seemed clear through, but the pass was judged to be forward. Soon afterwards Duncan secured more possession for us through his trademark jackalling over the ball, and from the quick tap penalty we attacked well down the right, Finlay S making good yards and setting up the ruck, then Mack - Andrew - Duncan - Kian and finally Gregor scored in a move to the left, Gregor deciding he didn't need the support from Logan K.
All in all a reasonable performance, however our ball retention at rucks, and the hard work in getting organised in defence needs to improve.
Thanks to Aaron for playing for us, definitely fitted in well as part of our backline.
Final Score:
Dunfermline 17 - 5 Dalziel/East Kilbride
