Under 16s earn a hard fought win against a determined Stornoway to secure 1/4 tie.

This weekend saw the under 16s on their travels, to play Stornoway for the first time in the second round of the Caley Cup.

The threat of snow and an Atlantic storm made travelling a challenge going north but in getting to Ullapool the ferry was thankfully running despite the winds and after a bumpy journey we arrived in Stornoway Friday night on time.

Up early to a hearty breakfast in the hotel a look out the window and the conditions were hardly ideal with the wind blowing and snow falling however by the time we got the ground the weather had improved and the match was played in sunshine and calm weather.

For the majority of this match Dunfermline enjoyed the bulk of possession and territory however Stornoway tackled like demons throughout and the result was never a sure thing until the closing minutes. Loads of early pressure saws lots of good build up work but the final pass was either dropped or not to hand. Eventually Brian found a way through to score from close in to give the boys a deserved lead. Stornoway themselves could have had an equalising score before half time however the ref opted not to award a penalty try after a kick and chase ended up with everyone on the deck and the ball bouncing behind the dead ball line.

The second half saw Stornoway start lively and nearly broke away down the blindside to the 22 however that was to be their only time in the Dunfermline half and the boys got on the front foot and scored three further tries from Brian, Ali S and Chris M.

In the end a hard earned win against a team who despite being under pressure for much of the game performed well in defence with a determined tackling display. After some food and chat, it was time to catch the boat and deal with the snow on the A9 to get home.

Thanks to everyone who made this trip possible;

To the parents and club for their support in getting this trip organised at short notice.

To all the touring party for our efforts in getting there and bringing home the victory. Well done everyone.

To Ian and his squad at Stornoway for their help and advice for the trip and the game itself which was a cracking cup tie, and for the food and chat afterwards. We wish u well for the future and hope more teams make the trip for you as it is a great experience and your boys deserve to play more matches.

Next up is it’s a Cup Quarter Final, we are drawn away – this time to the winners between Deeside and Ellon. Details on this and training this week to follow.
