P5 ONE's and TWO's succeed at Murrayfield

Dunfermline’s primary 5 mini rugby first outing, on the all weather pitches underneath the imposing Murrayfield stadium, was a successful one. 19 kids turned up to play. This allowed the coaches to select two teams of almost equal talent imaginatively named the ONEs and the TWOs.
Both teams scored plenty tries, with the ONES winning all four games, and the TWO’s losing only their first, by the narrow margin of 3-2.
Against the host team, Murrayfield Wanderers, both teams recorded 4-3 victories, with Callum, Jamie(2), Joe scoring for the ONEs and Euan(2) andAngus(2) for the 2’s. Defensively both teams – with the exception of Ellie-Ann!- conceded too much territory and fell off tackles, but in the event were not punished by a opposition which tended to spill the ball forward more often than most.
Against a game Haddington team victories of 7- 1 and 5- 1 were recorded, reflecting the greater continuity and committed tackling of the ONEs in which Calum’s unstinting defensive effort and astronomical tackle count left many of the parents seeking recommendations for next weeks pre match diets. Scorers Lewis (2) Callum (3) Cameron, Owen: Euan(4) Angus
The Edinburgh academy team, BATS, resembled our own TWOS in playing too much of the game in their own half, and although BATS pierced the defences 3 times with good penetration and continuity, they conceded 4, reflecting the improving attacking support work - passing and running- and defensive balance of the TWOs as the tournament went on - so both our teams won 4-3.
Scorers – Cameron, Lewis, Callum, An Other, Ross, Angus(2), Euan
Heriots who faced the TWO’s in the first match inflicted our only defeat of the day, 3-2. After coming back well when Angus scored a try after a scintillating break out by Craig, the TWO’s looked rusty and gave away terrority, running backwards in possession, falling off tackles and allowing the opposition too much space. Euan grabbed the consolation try. The ONES however avenged the defeat, winning by a similar 3-2 margin, Cameron, Joe and Roddy touching down, to ensure they were undefeated.
The coaches refereed well and the parents gave a strong showing and thank Murrayfield for their excellent organisation and hospitality. Some work is needed ( for the kids) on playing the game in the opponents half, and pressing their space, but overall a great start to the playing season
